Portable XRF Spectrometer is a non-destructive analytical test method used to determine the elemental composition of materials. The device operates by sending a controlled X-ray to the sample. This beam displaces electrons from the inner shells of the atoms within the sample. The atom, becoming unstable, balances itself by accepting an electron from an outer shell, and during this process, it emits a unique secondary (fluorescence) X-ray specific to each element. The high-precision SDD (Silicon Drift Detector) inside the device captures these rays, calculates their energies, and reflects the exact percentage of each element within the sample onto the screen within seconds. What is PMI Technology and How Does It Work?
PMI (Positive Material Identification) is a global quality control and safety standard applied to verify the alloy composition and quality of materials used in critical industrial facilities, production lines, and construction sites.Using the wrong metal alloy in industry (for instance, using carbon steel instead of stainless steel, which cannot withstand high pressure) can lead to explosions, corrosion leaks, and millions of dollars in downtime costs. PMI technology has been developed to eliminate these risks completely. How Does the PMI Process Work?
The portable PMI testing process applied in the field basically consists of 3 steps:
Non-Destructive Excitation: The portable device (usually a handheld XRF or LIBS spectrometer) is brought close to the metal surface to be analyzed, and excitation is initiated via the trigger mechanism. The device emits a controlled energy wave (X-ray or laser) onto the material surface. Elemental Separation: Signals reflected back from the atomic structure of the material are captured by the high-precision detectors inside the device. Within seconds, net percentage ratios of elements such as Chromium, Nickel, Molybdenum, Copper, and Titanium within the material are calculated. Library Matching and Verification: The integrated “Alloy Grade Library” within the device’s operating system comes into play. The obtained elemental percentages are automatically compared with international standards (AISI, ASTM, DIN, etc.). The device screen displays not only the element ratios but also the commercial name of the material directly: “Stainless Steel 316 (SS316)” or “Inconel 625”.Why Portable (Handheld) XRF Spectrometer?
Traditional laboratory analyses (such as ICP-OES or OES) require cutting, dissolving in acids, or melting the sample. This both causes a loss of time and renders valuable materials unusable. Our portable handheld XRF device brings the laboratory to the field:
Speed and Cost Advantage: The cost of a single measurement is virtually zero, and results are obtained in as short as 2 seconds. Zero Destruction: It leaves no physical or chemical marks on the sample. Light Element Capability: Thanks to its advanced hardware, it successfully analyzes hard-to-detect light elements such as magnesium, aluminum, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur even in the air (without requiring vacuum or helium gas).Industrial Applications and Sectoral Solutions
1. PMI (Positive Material Identification) and Alloy Analysis
In petrochemicals, refining, power plants, and the aerospace industry, using the wrong material can lead to disasters. Our device classifies stainless steels, tool steels, nickel alloys, titanium alloys, and copper alloys within seconds (e.g., 304, 316, Inconel, Monel). It rapidly distinguishes between carbon steels and alloy steels in the field.2. Jewelry, Mint, and Precious Metal Trade
Trust is essential in the precious metal market. This device accurately measures the purity of metals such as gold, silver, platinum, and palladium in terms of karats. Especially in detecting plated and counterfeit gold, it offers definitive solutions thanks to the ability of X-rays to penetrate below the surface. It lists the entire elemental distribution before entering the crucible in scrap gold purchases or refining processes.3. Mining, Ore Exploration, and Geological Studies
It instantly determines ore quality in drilling sites, open pits, or pre-laboratory screening processes. It is the greatest assistant to geologists in delineating cut-off grades and detecting base metals (Copper, Lead, Zinc) and rare earth elements.4. Recycling, Scrap, and Environmental Tests
It increases operational profitability by ensuring fast sorting of mixed metal scraps. Furthermore, in compliance with RoHS and WEEE directives, it monitors toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium in electronic waste or soil on a ppm basis.
