Demagnetizers – Industrial Demagnetization Systems
Demagnetizers are industrial systems designed to remove residual magnetic fields from components after Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) or manufacturing processes. They ensure parts are ready for subsequent operations and meet quality requirements.

Magnetic particle testing benches and lines are among the most effective Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods used for detecting surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. These industrial systems ensure maximum reliability in quality control processes by rapidly and accurately identifying cracks, cold shuts, forging defects, and welding flaws.
What is Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)?
The MPI method is based on magnetizing the component under test and detecting the magnetic leakage fields formed at discontinuity zones. Fine magnetic particles (either dry powder or liquid suspension) accumulate at these leakage field areas, making flaws clearly visible to the operator. For more detailed technical insights into the methodology, you can read our blog post on what is a magnetic particle crack detector .
How Do MPI Systems Work?
Modern magnetic particle testing systems operate through the following sequentially controlled steps:
-
The component is exposed to a strong magnetic field.
-
Surface or near-surface discontinuities distort the magnetic flux lines.
-
A magnetic leakage field is formed over the defect area.
-
Fluorescent or colored magnetic particles accumulate at these leakage zones.
-
Under UV (Ultraviolet) lamps or white light, flaws become highly visible for evaluation.
MPI Test Lines and System Configurations
-
Manual MPI Systems: Ideal for low-volume production and laboratory testing; operator-controlled, flexible, and cost-effective solutions.
-
Semi-Automatic MPI Systems: Enhanced with operator-assisted automation, offering faster inspection cycles and highly repeatable results.
-
Fully Automatic MPI Test Lines: Engineered for high-volume mass production; featuring robotic integration and minimum operator intervention for maximum throughput.
Electrical Current Types (AC / DC / FWDC / HWDC)
The type of electrical current utilized in MPI benches is selected based on the depth of the targeted defect and the material structure:
-
AC (Alternating Current): Delivers maximum sensitivity for detecting fine surface cracks.
-
DC (Direct Current): Ideal for identifying sub-surface (deeper) discontinuities.
-
FWDC (Full-Wave Direct Current): Provides a balanced solution for both surface and near-surface flaws.
-
HWDC (Half-Wave Direct Current): Increases particle mobility, maximizing crack visibility and definition.
Integrated Demagnetization Units
Following the inspection process, a residual magnetic field often remains on ferromagnetic components. Enclosed demagnetization is applied within modern MPI lines to fully neutralize this unwanted magnetism. Demagnetization prevents metal chips from sticking during subsequent machining, eliminates arc blow during welding, and prevents premature wear on critical moving parts. NEXSEN MPI benches feature fully integrated demagnetization channels.
