Ultrasonic Thickness Gauges (Wall Thickness and Corrosion)

Ultrasonic thickness gauges measure wall thickness precisely with access to only one side of the part. They are used to track thinning caused by corrosion and erosion in pipelines, pressure vessels, boilers, tanks and hull plates, to plan maintenance and avoid unexpected shutdowns.

This group covers pocket and compact gauges for fast field checks, A-Scan models that measure through paint and coatings, and EMAT thickness gauges that need neither surface preparation nor couplant.

To choose the right model, send us the material, thickness range, surface condition (paint, corrosion, temperature) and place of use, or try the product finder.

Frequently asked questions

How does an ultrasonic thickness gauge work?

The probe sends a sound wave into the material and measures the travel time of the echo from the back wall. With the sound velocity of the material known, this time converts directly into wall thickness. Measurement is one-sided; the part does not need to be cut or dismantled.

Can I measure on painted or corroded surfaces?

Yes. Gauges with an A-Scan display and dedicated algorithms measure through paint and coatings; EMAT thickness gauges measure through corrosion and coatings up to 1.5 mm without couplant or surface preparation.

Which thickness gauge should I choose?

A pocket or compact gauge for fast field checks, an A-Scan gauge for coated and corroded surfaces, and an EMAT gauge where couplant cannot be used or surface preparation is costly.
