Find it in 3 questions →Ekoscan METIS is a field-deployable encoded manual phased array scanner for wall thickness measurement and corrosion mapping on pipes, elbows and valves. A flexible phased array probe, dual-axis encoding, real-time analysis and digital recording come in one package, turning manual spot UT readings and handwritten results into traceable, repeatable, high-resolution thickness maps.
The application in detail: why piping wall thickness matters in nuclear plants and how METIS is used in the field, in our nuclear piping wall thickness measurement guide.

The problem it solves
In many plants, piping wall thickness is still measured manually at pre-marked points with single-element probes, and values are written on paper. The weaknesses are well known:
- Results are operator dependent; the same point may not be measured the same way in two campaigns.
- Handwriting causes transcription errors, and data is neither audit-ready nor traceable.
- Local thinning between grid points can be missed.
- Complex geometries such as elbows, tees and reducers are hard to measure with standard probes.
- Long measurement times, heavy couplant use and poor ergonomics increase safety risk.
What it does for your operation
- More data in less time: denser inspection per campaign, shorter setup and acquisition time.
- Fewer specialist operators: a guided workflow lets operators of all levels use the system.
- Reliable data for long-term operation (LTO): encoded, recorded measurements compare campaign to campaign, making thinning rate and remaining life assessment easier.
- Audit-ready records: measurements are stored digitally, with recording compliant with nuclear operator EDF’s requirements.
- Fewer consumables: less couplant and hazardous consumables.
- Protects past investment: the modular architecture works with legacy systems and digital asset management systems.
System components
- Flexible phased array probe: conforms to pipe curvature and complex geometries and covers a wide strip in one pass.
- Dual-axis encoded acquisition: every reading is stored with its position; the result is a C-scan thickness map.
- Real-time analysis and digital recording: the thickness map builds on screen during the scan and data is validated in the field.
- Guided workflow: a step-by-step interface from setup to reporting.
- Compact, field-deployable design: quick setup and work in tight spaces.

Applications
- Primary and secondary piping in nuclear power plants
- Steam generators and valves
- Flow-accelerated corrosion and erosion (FAC) monitoring programmes
- Wall thickness mapping on elbows, tees, reducers and other complex geometries
- Fast, traceable thickness campaigns during outages
